I was asked to take an exam and chose XML Master Basic because I thought it would be relevant in relation to my work.

Yes. I have constructed XML schemas for a project that needed valid XML documents. I have worked with XPath and I am working with XML practically every day.

About 2 months with reading a couple of hours every day.

I read the recommended material, the most relevant chapters from XML In A Nutshell and used W3Schools a lot. Besides I used XML Spy to test out some examples. XML Spy is great for testing XPATH expressions!

It's very important to have hands-on experience. Theory is one thing, but testing examples in editors like XML Spy is the key to success.
